SAU struggles in loss to St. Francis

Not much went right for the Bees.

After knocking off No. 12 Olivet Nazarene a week ago, St. Ambrose struggled on both sides of the ball in a 35-14 loss to St. Francis (Ill.) Saturday at Brady Street Stadium.

SAU allowed the USF quarterback to rush for five touchdowns, and the Bee offense didn't go over 100 yards of total offense until well into the fourth quarter.

It was just one of those days.

St. Francis (4-2, 4-0 MSFA) finished with 489 yards of total offense while St. Ambrose had 263 yards, most of those coming in the fourth quarter after the game had been decided.

The Saints led just 7-0 after one quarter but tacked on two second-quarter scores, on runs of 19 and 45 yards, to take a 21-0 lead at the break. Two more touchdown runs in the third quarter pushed the margin to 35-0.

John Benckendorf engineered two late scoring drives for the Bees.

Kaden King capped a 14-play, 80-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown run to get SAU on the board. Benckendorf then found Mark Skokna, who broke free for a 43-yard touchdown reception with 3:28 to play to account for the final score.

Taking over late in the first half, Benckendorf completed 8-of-10 passes for 140 yards. He also rushed for 35 yards on 10 attempts.

Ray Bouye finished with 42 yards on the ground. Eight different Bees caught at least one pass with Blake Wittman hauling in three and King catching two.

Nick Daniel led the defense with 11 total tackles. Drew AckmanBrody Mason and Connor Dertz were each credited with seven tackles, including one tackle for loss. Dertz also forced and recovered a fumble in the opening quarter.

St. Ambrose, now 3-5 overall and 2-2 in the conference, will visit Roosevelt next Saturday.
