St. Ambrose falls in overtime at Judson

It took a tipped completion on a two-point conversion with just over a minute left in regulation to force overtime and Judson capitalized to escape with a 34-28 win over St. Ambrose Saturday in Carpentersville, Ill.

The Eagles (2-4, 1-1 MSFA) scored on the first possession of overtime and the Bees were unable to answer as Tom Casey's fourth-down pass to Sam Kerr was knocked down in the end zone.

It never looked like the game would go to overtime.

Behind two T'Nahleg Hall touchdown runs and a scoring pass from Casey to Yemi Ward, St. Ambrose led 21-6 early in the second half. But save for a late drive, the Bee offense struggled the rest of the way.

Judson fought back and pulled within a point at 21-20 midway through the fourth quarter. SAU had the answer as Casey found Hunter Thompson on a 53-yard touchdown pass to rebuild a 28-20 lead with 3:18 to play.

But Judson went 82 yards to punch in a touchdown with 1:06 on the clock. The game-tying two-point conversion pass was seemingly broken up, but the tipped pass was hauled in by an Eagle, who ran it in to knot the score at 28-28.

A 21-yard run on second down in overtime set Judson up at the SAU 4-yard line, and two plays later, the Eagles had the lead.

After a missed two-point try, St. Ambrose needed a touchdown and PAT to pull out the win, and the Bees nearly got the TD on their first play but Casey's pass to Ward was broken up in the end zone. Hall rushed for two yards to set up a third-and-8, but Casey wasn't able to connect with Blake Wittman or Kerr on the final two plays.

SAU finished with just 255 yards of total offense while surrendering 509 yards to Judson.

Casey completed 10 passes for 119 yards. Wittman and Ward each had four receptions.

Hall carried the ball 22 times for 128 yards and two scores.

Nick Daniel was in on a team-leading 10 tackles. Brody Mason recorded nine tackles. Bernard Buhake and Drew Ackman each had two of the Bees' seven sacks. SAU finished with 15 tackles for loss.

St. Ambrose will visit No. 13 Olivet Nazarene next Saturday.
