SAU Cheer crowns 10 All-Americans

NAIA release

Following its second straight NAIA Competitive Cheer National Championship, St. Ambrose had 10 individuals named NAIA All-Americans. The Bees placed five on the first team, three on the second team, and two on the third team.

Leading the way for SAU were senior Carlos Fetterer and sophomore Taye Owten, who both posted perfect scores of 20 to be two of the four named Co-Cheerleaders of the Year. This marked the second straight season Owten has earned first-team All-American honors.

Joining Owten and Fetterer on the first team was Savannah Schumacher, a second-team pick last year. JP Elder and Rachel Ruplinger were also named First Team All-Americans.

Eliza Dzurisin was selected to the second team for the second consecutive year. Sydnee Horstman, an honorable mention recipient in 2023, and Haley Scholbrock were also placed on the second team. Austyn Goodale, a second-team choice in 2023, and Graysen Gerlinger earned third-team recognition.

The All-America teams are determined by the national championship judges. Competitors are graded on a scale where a score of 16.0 or better places someone on the First Team, 14.5-15.99 on the Second Team, and 12.0-14.49 on the Third Team. Student-Athletes are recorded doing four elements: toe tuck, trimple jump combination, round off back handspring full twisting layout, and stunts. They are graded on a scale of 1-5 ranging from poor form and technique to superior form and technique.

SAU won the National Championship with an overall score of 97.27, setting a record for highest score in the eight-year history of the event.
