SAU splits doubleheader at Trinity Christian

Seven different Bees had at least one hit and five different players drove in a run as St. Ambrose defeated Trinity Christian 6-3 in the second game of a doubleheader in Palos Heights, Ill., Tuesday. The Trolls took the opener 5-1.

The Bees struck first in the night cap. Dan Laughery's single in the second brought in Jake Mucha for a quick 1-0 lead. Noah McCreary later followed with an RBI single to score Laughery, and an error allowed Jalen Avery to come around for a 3-0 lead. Then in the fourth, Garrett Latoz ripped a run-scoring double to left to plate Laughery. Latoz finished with two hits in the win.

Trinity Christian (23-23, 15-13 CCAC) pushed across three runs in the fifth to pull within a run.

But St. Ambrose (23-20, 17-13 CCAC) put the game away with a pair of runs late. Mucha singled in Jack Day in the eighth and Brandon Matias lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Avery in the ninth for what proved to be the final run.

Brad Niedzwiedz got the victory in relief of Grant Baker. Baker didn't get the decision after striking out four over four scoreless innings. Jake Jacek struck out four over the final three frames to earn the save.

The Bees were only able to score once despite several chances in the opener. The Trolls built a 2-0 lead on a two-run home run in the fourth.

After coming up empty with the bases loaded and only one out in the third, SAU got on the board in the fifth as Adrian Zietara's ground out scored Chris McFarland to cut the deficit to 2-1.

But TCC bounced back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three times to go in front 5-1. St. Ambrose threatened again in the seventh as Brock Webber and Bryce Vincent hit consecutive singles to start the frame, but the next three hitters were retired to end the contest.

Vincent and Latoz each picked up two hits in the first game.

Aidan Goggins took the loss after working 4 1/3 innings. Carson Spelman did not allow a run in 1 2/3 innings of relief work.

Wednesday's originally scheduled game at Clarke has been canceled so the Bees are next scheduled to host Calumet Sunday at NelsonCorp Field in Clinton, Iowa, in the final regular season games of the season.
