St. Ambrose drops doubleheader to Trinity Christian

Despite scoring 17 total runs, St. Ambrose dropped a doubleheader to Trinity Christian by scores of 13-8 and 10-9 Tuesday afternoon at Modern Woodman Park.

A six-run eighth inning for the Bees wasn't enough to offset a seven-run second for the Trolls in the nightcap. Trinity Christian (20-16, 12-6 CCAC) led 7-0 early but St. Ambrose came back with three runs in the bottom half of the frame. Bryce Vincent had an RBI triple and Jalen Avery an RBI double to cut the deficit to 7-3.

The Trolls pushed their advantage to 10-3 in the seventh. But the Bees bounced back in the eighth. Adrian Zietara and Caden Thode drew back-to-back walks to start things off. Vincent followed with a double to score the pair. Avery was hit by a pitch and Garrett Latoz walked to load the bases. Jake Mucha singled to cut the margin to 10-6.

With two outs, Brock Webber singled to right to score two more runs. After Zietara walked to reload the bases, Brandon Matias was hit by a pitch to force in a run to put the score at 10-9 before the inning came to an end.

But that was it for SAU as the Bees were retired in order in the ninth.

St. Ambrose (14-13, 8-6 CCAC) managed just six hits, two coming off the bat of Vincent.

Grant Baker was charged with the loss. Danny Molony worked five innings in relief before Aidan Goggins threw two scoreless frames.

The Bees weren't able to hang on to a 5-1 lead in the opener. Dan Laughery and Latoz hit sacrifice flies and Noah McCreary ripped a bases-loaded triple as part of a five-run second inning.

TCC eventually took a 6-5 lead in the fourth before a Latoz double scored Vincent to tie the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the fourth. But the Trolls broke things open with a six-run sixth inning. Mucha and Webber had RBIs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to 12-8 before Trinity scored an insurance run in the seventh to account for the final score.

Zietara finished with three hits while McCreary and Vincent each had two.

Alex Heckroth took the loss in relief of Jacob Bosse. Carson Spelman also pitched in relief.

St. Ambrose returns to Modern Woodman Park Wednesday for a CCAC doubleheader against Saint Xavier.
