SAU keeps rolling by sweeping Calumet

St. Ambrose extended its winning streak to six games by sweeping a doubleheader at Calumet by scores of 7-0 and 6-4 Saturday in Whiting, Ind.

Sergio Marchizza tossed a three-hit shutout in the opener. He struck out eight and walked one.

Marchizza got the only run he'd need when Garrett Latoz homered leading off the top of the third. But the Bees were far from done in the inning. Jake Mucha drew a walk and moved to second on a passed ball. Noah McCreary followed with an RBI single, and he came in to score on Brock Webber's double. Brandon Matias followed with a two-run home run to open up a 5-0 lead.

Webber ripped a two-run double in the fourth to pad the lead, putting SAU in front 7-0.

Adrian Zietara finished with three hits while Webber and McCreary each had two. Dan Laughery also had a hit in the win.

St. Ambrose (14-11, 8-4 CCAC) hit three home runs, including back-to-back shots as part of a three-run eighth inning, to rally for the 6-4 victory in the second game.

The Bees came back three different times, starting early as Calumet (14-22, 7-11 CCAC) jumped to a 2-0 lead after two innings.

Mucha started his three-hit game with a solo homer in the third to get SAU on the board. He tied the game with a single that scored Jalen Avery in the fifth. After the Crimson Wave went in front 3-2 in the sixth, Mucha again tied things with a single that again brought in Avery.

CCSJ pushed across a run in the seventh to retake a 4-3 lead. But in the eighth, SAU used the back-to-back homers to complete the comeback. Matias hit a two-run shot to bring in Tyreece Morgan to put the Bees in front. Joey Fitzgerald followed with a blast of his own to increase the lead to 6-4.

Alex Heckroth and Brad Niedzwiedz closed the door from there. Pitching in relief of Frank Quinn, Heckroth earned the win by striking out two over two innings. Niedzwiedz had one strikeout in retiring the side in order in the ninth to pick up the save.

Sunday's doubleheader at Calumet has been postponed due to the expected weather in the area. No makeup date has been announced. The Bees are scheduled to return home to host Trinity Christian Tuesday and Saint Xavier Wednesday at Modern Woodmen Park.
