SAU drops non-conference game at Clarke

St. Ambrose couldn't overcome some of its own mistakes in a 10-6 loss to Clarke in Peosta, Iowa, Tuesday afternoon.

The Bees led 4-0 early before allowing the Pride to score 10 runs over three innings. SAU was plagued by three errors, which led to three unearned runs, five walks, four hit batters, four wild pitches and three passed balls.

SAU got off to a good start. The Bees took advantage of two Clarke errors to plate three runs in the second inning. Jake Mucha had a two-run double and Garrett Latoz also drove in a run in the frame.

In the fourth, St. Ambrose added another run. Latoz singled in Adrian Zietara, who led off the inning with a base hit before stealing both second and third, to push the advantage to 4-0.

Clarke (10-14) used five hits and a pair of walks, along with an SAU error, to score six runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Bees answered in the fifth. Brock Webber was hit by a pitch before moving to third on Dan Laughery's double. Fitzgerald followed with a base hit to tie the game at 6-6.

The tie was short-lived as the Pride came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Clarke added an insurance run in the sixth and that was enough as SAU did not score over the final four frames.

Noah McCreary, Chris McFarland and Jalen Avery also had hits in the loss.

Nathaniel Johnson started and allowed just three hits over three scoreless innings. He was followed by Alex Heckroth, Justin Lane, Jacob Sciame, Danny Molony, Aidan Goggins and Jake Jacek. Sciame was charged with the loss.

The Bees will return to conference play Thursday with a doubleheader at Saint Xavier.
