St. Ambrose drops two one-run games at Olivet Nazarene

St. Ambrose saw a pair of rallies come up short in two one-run losses at Olivet Nazarene Tuesday afternoon. The Bees dropped the CCAC-opening doubleheader by scores of 10-9 and 7-6.

Both games saw SAU overcome multiple-run deficits late. In the first game, the Bees trailed 9-4 after five innings. But St. Ambrose rallied in the sixth.

Adrian Zietara started things with a double. Bryce Vincent was hit by a pitch and Jake Mucha walked to load the bases. Garret Latoz also drew a walk to bring in one run and Noah McCreary singled to plate a pair. That cut the deficit to 9-7 entering the seventh. Joey Fitzgerald led off the final inning with a home run to right. Zietara reached on an error, moved to second on Vincent's bunt single and advanced to third when Mucha walked. Latoz lined a sacrifice fly to left to tie the game.

But Olivet Nazarene took advantage of a pair of walks in the bottom of the seventh to get the walk-off win on a double to center.

Fitzgeralnd and McCreary each had two hits in the opener. Brandon Matias ripped a two-run home run to give the Bees a quick 2-0 lead in the first. Brock Webber had an RBI single in the fifth that helped SAU to a 4-2 lead before ONU scored seven runs in the bottom of the frame.

Alex Heckroth took the loss in relief of Sergio Marchizza. Jake Jacek also pitched in relief.

The second game followed a similar script. Matias hit a two-run home run in the first, and in the second, Vincent stole home on a double steal as the Bees went in front 3-0.

The Tigers scored six straight runs to go in front 6-3 after six. In the eighth, the Bees drew even. Fitzgerald hit a two-run double and Vincent followed with a sacrifice fly to knot the game at 6-6. ONU answered with what proved to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth. St. Ambrose threatened in the ninth as Latoz singled and Zietara drew a one-out walk but the potential rally ended there.

Mucha collected two of the Bees' seven hits.

Brad Niedzwiedz was charged with the loss after 3 1/3 innings in relief. Joey Turek worked the first four innings and Grant Baker recorded the final two outs.

SAU (6-8, 0-2 CCAC) will play its home opener Friday as the Bees host St. Francis at Modern Woodmen Park.
