Bees drop pair in Kansas City

St. Ambrose dropped a pair of games at the PBR Homefield Complex in Kansas City, Mo., Saturday. The Bees fell to Doane 6-1 and then to No. 10 Missouri Baptist 17-8.

SAU struggled in the opener, managing just one hit, that a solo home run off the bat of Brock Webber in the top of the first. Doane tied the game in the bottom of the inning and took the lead for good with a two-run third. The Tigers, who capitalized on three Bee errors, also scored one run in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Despite not getting another hit, St. Ambrose put a runner on in five of the final six innings. Jake Mucha drew walks in both the second and fifth innings, Jalen Avery drew a walk in the third, Webber was hit by a pitch in the sixth, and Bryce Vincent reached on a passed ball after a strikeout in the seventh. But the Bees came up empty.

Justin Lane took the loss after allowing three earned runs over 3 1/3 frames. Grant Baker and Alex Heckroth pitched in relief.

SAU got off to a fast start but couldn't keep pace with the nationally-ranked Spartans in the 17-8 loss. Webber again started the scoring, doubling to center to plate Noah McCreary in the top of the first. Joey Fitzgerald followed with a two-run home run that also brought in pinch runner Adrian Zietara for a 3-0 advantage.

In a sign of things to come, Missouri Baptist hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the inning. Webber continued his big day with a two-run single in the second before MBU got a run back in its half. Trailing 5-3, the Spartans broke things open with a 10-run third. The frame featured five home runs.

In all, Missouri Baptist would hit eight homers. Vincent, Dan Laughery and McCreary drove in the final three SAU runs.

Brad Niedzwiedz was charged with the loss. Jake Jacek and Nathaniel Johnson pitched in relief.

The Bees, now 6-6, will open CCAC play Tuesday at Olivet Nazarene.
