SAU gets Saturday sweep to take series from Mount Mercy

St. Ambrose swept Mount Mercy by scores of 13-4 and 5-3 Saturday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to get three wins in the four-game weekend series.

Adrian Zietara, Brock Webber and Bryce Vincent each had three hits to power a 16-hit attack in the 13-4 win. Brandon Matias homered twice, Chris McFarland and Garrett Latoz each had two hits, and Jake Mucha added one.

Despite scoring first, on a Latoz sacrifice fly in the second, the Bees were forced to rally after Mount Mercy grabbed a 3-1 lead. Matias's first home run, a two-run shot, tied the game at 3-3 in the third. An inning later, Zietara put SAU in front for good with a single that scored Jalen Avery. Webber and McFarland added two-run singles in the fourth before an error allowed the sixth and final run of the frame to cross the plate.

Matias launched a three-run blast in the fifth before Caden Thode's groundout brought in the final Bee run. The Mustangs scored their final run in the bottom of the sixth.

Jacob Bosse earned the win. He struck out nine while allowing three runs over five innings. Justin Lane tossed the final two innings.

St. Ambrose kept scoring in the series finale, plating at least one run in each of the first three innings of the 5-3 victory.

Webber, Mucha and Vincent had RBIs in the top of the first. Joey Fitzgerald pushed the lead to 4-0 with a solo shot in the second. After Mount Mercy got on the board in the bottom of the second, Webber lifted a sacrifice fly to score Zietara in the third for a 5-1 lead. The Mustangs added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

Webber and Noah McCreary each collected two hits.

Frank Quinn allowed just two runs over six innings to pick up the win. Brad Niedzwiedz got two outs before Jake Jacek earned the save by retiring the final batter with the potential tying runs on base.

St. Ambrose (6-4) will travel to Kansas City to play Doane and Missouri Baptist next Friday and Saturday.
