Turek pitches Bees past Mustangs

Joey Turek struck out six over 6 1/3 innings and Jake Jacek recorded the final two outs to help St. Ambrose to a 4-3 win in the second game of a doubleheader at Mount Mercy Friday afternoon.

Turek was staked to a 4-0 lead. Adrian Zietara was able to score on an error on Brock Webber's double in the third to put the Bees on the board. An inning later, Garrett Latoz singled in Jake Mucha and Noah McCreary followed with a double that plated both pinch runner Tyreece Morgan and Joey Fitzgerald.

Mount Mercy pushed across single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and threatened for more in the seventh. The Mustangs had runners on the corners with one out leading to Jacek entering the game. He got a fly out that brought in a run to cut the SAU lead to a single run. With the potential tying run on third, Jacek got another fly ball to escape the jam and close out the win.

Webber, Zietara and Fitzgerald each collected two hits in the victory. Chris McFarland also had a hit for St. Ambrose.

The win came after a late rally came up short in a 7-6 loss in the first game. Trailing 7-3 in the eighth, McCreary launched a three-run homer to center to cut the deficit to 7-6. In the ninth, SAU theatened to tie. Brandon Matias walked to start the inning and pinch runner Jalen Avery stole second. With two outs, Bryce Vincent singled to left but Avery was thrown out at the plate to end the game.

McCreary, Matias, Vincent and McFarland had two hits apiece. Zietara drove in three with his double in the fourth tying the game at 2-2 and his sacrifice fly in the sixth pulling the Bees to within 6-3.

Sergio Marchizza took the loss. Grant Baker allowed just one run over the final three innings in relief.

The two teams will compete their four-game set with a doubleheader in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Saturday.
