Bees earn split with No. 14 Indiana Wesleyan

Brock Webber homered and drove in three, and Adrian Zietara knocked in the game winner in the ninth inning as St. Ambrose defeated No. 14 Indiana Wesleyan 5-4 in the second game of a doubleheader Friday in Kokomo, Ind.

Webber and Bryce Vincent had RBI singles in the third and fourth innings, respectively, to even the score at 2-2 after Indiana Wesleyan (4-3) pushed across a pair of runs in the first inning. Webber then launched a two-run blast in the fifth to put the Bees in front 4-2. The Wildcats answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 4-4.

The score remained knotted into the ninth.

Jalen Avery drew a one-out walk and promptly stole second. Noah McCreary advaned Avery to third and Zietara followed with his two-out single to center to score Avery.

Sergio Marchizza made the one-run lead hold up. He struck out the side in order, which included a pair of strikeouts.

Marchizza earned the win with 4 2/3 innings of one-hit relief. He struck out six. Joey Turek was charged with four runs over 4 1/3 innings.

Webber and Zietara each finished with two hits, while McCreary, Vincent, Avery and Garrett Latoz each had one hit. Avery scored two runs, with Zietara, Webber and Cade Meek also scoring.

St. Ambrose was shutout on six hits in the opener. McCreary picked up two of the hits while Webber, Zietara, Vincent and Jake Mucha also reached safely.

Indiana Wesleyan pushed across single runs in the second, fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth innings.

Frank Quinn took the loss after allowing two runs over four innings. Brad Niedzwiedz tossed the final four frames.

The teams will complete their three-game set with a single game Saturday.
