Bees take out top-seeded Saints to continue CCAC Tournament run

Frank Quinn and Hayden Kingsbury combined to allow just two earned runs as St. Ambrose kept its season alive with a 7-2 win over top-seeded St. Francis (Ill.) at the CCAC Tournament in Joliet, Ill., Saturday.

Quinn allowed just four hits and one earned run over six frames while striking out four to earn the win. Kingsbury picked up the save by tossing the final three innings. He struck out three.

In an elimination game featuring the top two teams in the conference during the regular season, it was the Bees who struck first.

Nate Villagomez's ground ball in the second inning scored Jake Mucha, and when the throw got away, Chris McFarland followed with a second SAU run. Later in the inning, Noah McCreary ripped a double down the left field line to bring in pinch runner Jalen Avery to increase the lead to 3-0.

Quinn, who didn't allow a run through the first five innings, was touched for a run in the sixth. But the Bees responded in the bottom of the inning. Mucha doubled to right center to score Brock Webber and Mike Pawyza singled to plate Mucha to push the lead to 5-1.

McCreary belted a two-run home run in the seventh. The Saints tacked on one run in the top of the ninth to account for the final score.

McCreary and Villagomez each collected two hits. Cooper Huckabone also singled in the win.

St. Ambrose will play again Saturday at 4 p.m. against the winner of the Trinity Christian-Saint Xavier game.
