SAU gets win, tie at Trinity International

With their chances of winning the conference gone, St. Ambrose got a win and a tie at Trinity International Saturday. The Bees won the opener 10-3 before the second game was called due to darkness with the teams tied at 4-4 entering the ninth inning.

The second game will not be completed; instead it will be recorded as a tie.

After St. Francis swept a three-game set from Olivet Nazarene to clinch the CCAC regular-season crown, St. Ambrose was playing to finish alone in second place. And behind two solo home runs from Cooper Huckabone in the first game Saturday, SAU did just that.

The Bees jumped in front in the top of the first. As part of a 3-for-3 performance, Noah McCreary doubled to lead things off, then Adrian Zietara, Huckabone and Brock Webber were each hit by a pitch to bring in the first Bee run. Bryce Vincent followed with a run-scoring double, and one out later, Chris McFarland drove in Webber with an RBI ground out.

SAU took advantage of a TIU error to plate a pair of unearned runs in the second. After the Trojans closed to within 5-3, the Bees plated two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Huckabone homered in each frame. McFarland added an RBI double in the fifth and Zietara had an RBI ground out in the sixth.

That was more than enough support for Joey Turek. Turek scattered 13 hits over seven innings, and allowed just three runs in earning the complete-game victory.

St. Ambrose also jumped to a quick lead in the second game. McCreary led off with a home run for a fast 1-0 lead. He added a two-run single in the second.

Trinity International fought back and went in front 4-3 after a three-run fifth inning. Logan Rose knotted the score at 4-4 with a solo blast in the top of the sixth.

The game remained tied from that point and was ultimately called heading into the top of the ninth.

Jacob Bosse started and struck out nine over 4 1/3 innings. He was charged with four runs. Grant Baker worked 2 2/3 scoreless frames before Hunter Keim struck out two in his one inning of work.

The Bees will now head into postseason play as the CCAC Tournament begins Thursday.
