St. Ambrose drops mid-week game to St. Francis

A sixth-run fourth inning was the difference as St. Ambrose fell to St. Francis (Ill.) 10-3 at NelsonCorp Field in Clinton, Iowa, Tuesday afternoon.

The Saints (17-23, 12-7 CCAC) put together six hits in plating the six runs that broke a scoreless tie in the fourth. It allowed USF to claim the season series as the teams split a doubleheader in Joliet, Ill., back on Mar. 20.

The Bees battled back with two runs in the sixth with Cooper Huckabone's single driving in Jalen Avery and Brock Webber following with a double to score Huckabone. SAU threatened for more but Bryce Vincent lined into a double play to end the inning.

St. Ambrose (18-21, 13-6 CCAC) got its final run in the seventh when Adrian Zietara grounded out to bring in Jake Mucha to cut the deficit to 6-3.

USF responded by scoring two runs in the eighth and added a pair more in the ninth to end the scoring.

Chris McFarland was 2-for-3 finishing as the only Bee with multiple hits. Vincent, Mucha and Nate Villagomez also had hits in the loss.

Jacob Sciame, the second of six SAU pitchers used in the game, took the loss. He entered in relief of Hayden Kingsbury, who did not allow a run over the first two innings. Frank Quinn, Nick Vollmert, Nathaniel Johnson and Alex Heckroth also pitched out of the bullpen.

St. Ambrose will play a three-game set with Judson this weekend. The teams will meet for a single game in Elgin, Ill., Friday before playing a doubleheader back in Clinton Saturday.
