Home runs power Bees past Trolls in opener

Brock Webber, Nate Villagomez and Cooper Huckabone each homered and had three hits, and the trio combined for 13 RBIs to power St. Ambrose past Trinity Christian 15-2 in the first game of a doubleheader in Palos Heights, Ill., Tuesday. The Trolls came back to win the second game 10-7.

In a game of conference leaders, it was the Bees who struck first.

Home runs accounted for the first seven SAU runs. Webber, who finished 3-for-5 with two homers and six RBIs, got the scoring started with a two-run blast in the first. Villagomez, who was 3-for-3 with four batted in, lifted a two-run shot in the third. Webber smacked his second homer of the game, this one a three-run shot, to increase the lead to 7-0 in the fifth.

Webber's second was the start of a huge inning for St. Ambrose. Mike Pawyza had an RBI single, another run scored when Thomas DeBrower reached on an error, Villagomez drove in two more with a base hit, and, as part of a 3-for-5 day, Huckabone capped the 10-run frame with a three-run homer.

Webber picked up his sixth RBI of the game with a single in the seventh. Trinity Christian pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh to account for the final score.

Noah McCreary collected two hits, and DeBrower, Jake Mucha and Chris McFarland each had one hit. Caden Thode, courtesy running for Villagomez, scored four runs.

Joey Turek got the complete-game win, allowing just five hits and one earned run. He struck out five.

Trinity Christian (18-17, 12-5 CCAC) was able to maintain its slim conference lead by winning the second game 10-7.

St. Ambrose (15-20, 10-5 CCAC) was forced to play catch-up after falling behind 2-0 after one. And the Bees got even in the second on RBIs from Pawyza and DeBrower. The Trolls came right back with three runs in the bottom of the second to grab a 5-2 lead. Again SAU answered. A Webber single plated Huckabone and Mucha followed with a double to score Bryce Vincent and Webber to tie the game at 5-5 in the third. Mucha later in the inning scored on a passed ball to put St. Ambrose in front 6-5. McCreary padded the lead with a run-scoring ground out in the sixth.

But two Bee errors led to four unearned Troll runs in the bottom of the sixth. TCC added an insurance run in the seventh.

Mucha finished 3-for-4 while McCreary, Vincent and Pawyza each picked up two hits.

Hayden Kingsbury, one of four SAU relievers used in the game, took the loss. Nick Vollmert started before giving way to Grant Baker, Kingsbury, Jacob Sciame and Brad Niedzwiedz.

St. Ambrose will host Roosevelt in a nine-inning game at Modern Woodmen Park Friday before completing the three-game series between the two teams with a doubleheader in Crestwood, Ill., Saturday.
