SAU sweeps three-game series from Calumet St. Joseph

St. Ambrose kept pace with the conference leaders by sweeping a three-game series from Calumet St. Joseph. The Bees won on the road 15-4 in seven innings Friday before sweeping a home doubleheader at NelsonCorp Field in Clinton, Iowa, Saturday by scores of 2-1 and 7-5.

The wins moved the Bees to 14-19 overall and 9-4 in the CCAC. It also sets up a big doubleheader at conference-leading Trinity Christian (17-16, 11-4 CCAC) Tuesday.

SAU pounded out 10 hits and took advantage of seven CCAC errors to win Friday's series opener. But the Bees did it after spotting the Crimson Wave a 3-0 lead after one inning. Mike Pawyza and Adrian Zietara had RBIs during a three-run second inning to tie the game, and Chris McFarland and Nate Villagomez each drove in one to put the Bees up 5-3 in the third.

Calumet got a run back in the bottom of the third before St. Ambrose pulled away. SAU scored once in the fourth, added two more in the sixth and broke things open with a seven-run seventh.

Zietara, McFarland, Villagomez and Cooper Huckabone each had two hits in the win. Pawyza drove in three while Villagomez and Brock Webber each knocked in a pair. Jake Mucha scored three times. Noah McCreary collected one hit, one RBI and two runs scored.

Conor O'Hara earned the win by allowing three earned runs over six innings. He struck out eight. Hayden Kingsbury tossed the final frame.

The Bees got a walk-off win in the first game Saturday. In a game in which he walked seven and struck out 12, Jacob Bosse allowed just one hit over five scoreless frames. He left with a 1-0 lead thanks to Huckabone's RBI single in the fourth.

CCSJ drew even in the sixth, but it took just two batters for SAU to get the win in the seventh. Huckabone ripped a double to left center to lead off the inning. Webber dropped down a sacrifice bunt, and when the pitcher's throw to first got away, Huckabone was able to cross home plate with the winning run.

Hunter Keim earned the win in relief, allowing one hit and striking out one in his inning of work. Nick Hernandez also struck out one while pitching the sixth.

Webber and Villagomez each knocked in a pair as the Bees completed the sweep with a 7-5 win Saturday. With St. Ambrose trailing 4-3 in the sixth, Villagomez laced a single to left to plate two to put the Bees in front 5-4. An inning later, Webber slashed a double to left center to score two to up the lead to 7-4.

Huckabone, Mucha and Villagomez each had two of SAU's 10 hits. Mucha and Bryce Vincent scored two runs apiece.

Keim again earned the win, working four innings in relief. He allowed just one hit and one unearned run while striking out three. Parker Ruth threw the first 2 1/3 innings and allowed one run before Frank Quinn struck out four over 2 2/3 frames.
