Bees take 2 of 3 at Indiana South Bend

St. Ambrose did it with pitching and an offensive explosion. The Bees rebounded from dropping the opening game of a three-game set 12-3 by winning the final two at Indiana South Bend. SAU won the second game of Sunday's doubleheader 1-0 before closing the series with a 13-2 win Monday.

Conor O'Hara and Nick Vollmert combined on a three-hit shutout in the 1-0 victory. O'Hara earned the win after working the first 6 1/3 innings. He struck out three. Vollmert got the save with 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief. He struck out a pair.

Noah McCreary and Adrian Zietara supplied all the offense, combining for all seven of the team's hits. McCreary went 3-for-4 while Zietara was 4-for-4 and scored the game's only run. That run came in the top of the second. Zietara ripped a one-out double to left, moved to third on Chris McFarland's groundout and then came in to score when Cade Meek reached on an error.

McCreary and Zietara were hitless, but the rest of the team picked up the slack in Monday's 13-2 win. Jake Mucha and Mike Pawyza each had three hits and Brock Webber had two.

Trailing 1-0, St. Ambrose took the lead for good with a five-run second inning. With the bases loaded, McCreary drew a walk, Zietara was hit by a pitch and Cooper Huckabone was walked. Webber followed with a two-run single to cap the inning.

McFarland had a sacrifice fly in the third for a 6-1 lead. Three more runs crossed the plate in the fifth. Pawyza had his first of two run-scoring doubles and Nate Villagomez laced an RBI single in the frame. Mucha knocked in two more with a single in the sixth. Pawyza also drove in a run in the sixth.

Joey Turek earned the win by striking out six over five innings. He allowed just five hits and one earned run. Jacob Bosse tossed the final two frames.

In the series opener, McCreary staked SAU to a 1-0 lead with a home run to right leading off the game. But IU South Bend scored two runs in the second and three more in the third. McFarland and Villagomez had RBIs in the fourth to get the Bees to within 5-3 before the Titans pushed across five runs in the bottom of the inning to regain control.

Frank Quinn took the loss. Grant Baker, Brad Niedzwiedz and Jacob Sciame each entered in relief.

SAU (11-19, 6-4 CCAC) will play a three-game series against Calumet this weekend. The teams will meet for a single game in Whiting, Ind., Friday before playing a doubleheader in Clinton, Iowa, Saturday.
