SAU outlasts ONU in second game of a doubleheader

St. Ambrose rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie in an eventual 7-3 win over Olivet Nazarene in the second game of a doubleheader at Modern Woodmen Park Tuesday afternoon. The Bees dropped the first game 8-6.

After ONU (14-12, 4-1 CCAC) pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to forge a 3-3 tie, SAU went to work in the bottom half. Adrian Zietara got things started with a double and one out later, Chris McFarland drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Jalen Avery dropped down a bunt and beat it out for a base hit. The third baseman's throw got away allowing both Zietara and McFarland to score. Noah McCreary walked before back-to-back singles from Cooper Huckabone and Brock Webber knocked in pinch runner Cody Thode for a 6-3 lead.

Webber added another run-scoring hit in the eighth to account for the final score. Webber and Huckabone each went 3-for-5 while Avery finished 2-for-3.

Avery's first hit got the scoring started. He ripped a two-run home run down the left-field line in the second inning. Bryce Vincent had an RBI single in the third for a 3-0 lead before the Tigers came back.

McCreary and Mike Pawyza also had hits in the win.

Hunter Keim got the win in relief of Frank Quinn. Heim worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. Quinn struck out five while surrendering a single earned run over 5 1/3.

The Bees were two outs away from sweeping the twin bill.

Leading 4-2 in the seventh thanks to three Olivet Nazarene errors and a McCreary RBI single, St. Ambrose (7-17, 2-2 CCAC) watched it all fall apart in the final inning. After retiring the first hitter, the Bees allowed a single and consecutive walks to load the bases. A hit batsman forced in a run before a two-run single gave the Tigers a 5-4 lead. ONU tacked on two more runs to go in front 8-4.

SAU made things interesting in the bottom of the frame. Huckabone was hit by a pitch and Webber walked. Vincent singled to load the bases. Jake Mucha walked to bring in one and Zietara lined a sacrifice fly to right to cut the deficit to 8-6. But the rally ended there as Pawyza lined into a double play to end the contest.

Vincent and McFarland each had two of the team's five hits.

Jacob Bosse pitched well, allowing three hits and three earned runs over 6 1/3 innings. He struck out nine. Hayden Kingsbury was charged with the loss.

St. Ambrose will host Saint Xavier in a single game Friday.
