SAU drops series at Mount Mercy

St. Ambrose managed just 11 total hits in getting swept in a three-game series at Mount Mercy Saturday and Sunday. The Bees dropped the nine-inning opener 7-5 Saturday before losing Sunday's doubleheader by scores of 3-0 and 4-1.

And the Bees actually struck first in the series. Brock Webber gave SAU a 1-0 in the second inning of Saturday's game when he scored as Jake Mucha reached on an error. Chris McFarland followed with an RBI groundout to plate Cooper Huckabone for a 2-0 lead.

But St. Ambrose would get just two hits over the next five innings as Mount Mercy (8-6) went in front 7-2. The Bees came back to life in the top of the ninth loading the bases with one out. Adrian Zietara lift a sacrifice fly to center to score Huckabone before Nate Villagomez singled to re-load the bases. Noah McCreary reached on an error, the Mustangs' second error of the frame, allowing two more runs to score. But with the tying runs in scoring position, Mike Pawyza grounded out to end the game.

Griffin Lapp was charged with the loss in relief of Frank Quinn. Quinn allowed just one earned run over four innings. Hayden Kingsbury and Grant Baker also pitched in relief for the Bees.

St. Ambrose threatened to take the lead in Game 1 Sunday. McCreary led off with a walk, Mucha was hit by a pitch and Bryce Vincent singled to load the bases with no outs. But a pop up, a strikeout and a ground ball ended the threat.

Thomas DeBrower had a two-out single in the second and Webber had a two-out hit in the sixth for the only other Bee hits. Mount Mercy scored once in the second and two in the third and pitched out of a two-out, bases-loaded situation in the seventh to get the win.

Conor O'Hara took the loss after allowing three runs over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out six. Joey Turek tossed the final 1 1/3 innings.

SAU would get just three more hits in the series finale - a Webber double in the first, a DeBrower RBI single in the fourth and a Logan Rose pinch-hit single in the seventh. DeBrower's hit cut the deficit to 2-1 before the Mustangs answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Even with only the three hits, SAU had its chances, putting at least one runner on base in six of the seven innings.

Nick Vollmert was tagged with the loss despite surrendering a single earned run over 3 1/3 innings. Nick Hernandez did not allow a hit over the final 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

SAU, now 3-12, will head to Florida for multiple games in the Warner Invitational Thursday through Saturday.
