St. Ambrose splits weekend series at Benedictine

In a four-game series featuring 66 runs and 90 hits, St. Ambrose earned a split at Benedictine Saturday and Sunday. The Bees won the first game each day, by scores of 17-3 and 10-6. They lost 15-8 and 5-2.

SAU got the offensive fireworks started early, putting up 17 runs on 21 hits in the series opener Saturday. THe Bees scored in six of the seven innings, and put up multiple runs in four frames.

The Bees led 6-0 early. Then, after Benedictine got within 6-3, SAU put up five runs in the fifth and five more in the seventh to win going away.

Nine different Bees collected hits. Cooper Huckabone led the way, going 4-for-5 with four runs scored and three RBIs. Nate Villagomez and Noah McCreary each had three hits. Adrian Zietara, Bryce Vincent, Jake Mucha, Chris McFarland and Mike Pawyza had two hits apiece. Mucha matched Huckabone by driving in three. Zietara, Vincent, McFarland and Villagomez each knocked in two.

Nick Vollmert was the beneficiary, earning the win after pitching four innings. He allowed five hits and three runs while striking out five. Hunter Keim earned the save by working the final three scoreless frames.

St. Ambrose wasn't able to get the sweep Friday after falling behind 7-0 after two innings in the nightcap. A five-run sixth inning helped SAU claw to within 9-6, but the Ravens answered back with six runs of their own in the bottom of the frame.

McCreary and Vincent each had three hits while Zietara and McFarland had two apiece. Zietara drove in three.

Brad Niedzwiedz was charged with the loss. Grant Baker, Anthony Barrios and Mitch Thompson combined for 4 1/3 innings out of the bullpen.

Vincent (three), McCreary, Huckabone, McFarland and Brock Webber (two apiece) had multi-hit games in SAU's 10-6 win to open Sunday. Vincent, Huckabone and Jalen Avery each had two RBIs. It was Avery's two-run home run in the sixth that pushed St. Ambrose in front 8-3. Vincent and Webber added RBI hits later in the inning as the lead grew to 10-3.

Frank Quinn got the win after allowing four runs over six innings. Conor O'Hara tossed the final frame.

The Bee bats were finally silenced in the series finale. SAU scratched out just three hits and two runs. Two of those hits and both runs came in the seventh inning. Pawyza had a one-out single before McCreary singled through the right side to plate a pair. Zietara had a two-out single in the third for the Bees' only other hit.

Griffin Lapp took the loss. Jacob Bosse and Parker Ruth did not allow an earned run over the final three innings in relief.

St. Ambrose, now 3-5 on the season, will play a four-game series at Indiana Tech next weekend.
