Mathis wins National Championship in discus

Bees' Mathis wins national title (Steve Batterson/Quad City Times)

Gulf Shores, Ala. - Josh Mathis became a National Champion in the discus on Day 2 of the 2021 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Mathis is the first men's National Champion for St. Ambrose since Anthony Peters won the 5,000-meter racewalk in 2018. 

The senior from Geneseo, Ill. won his flight with a throw of 51.15 meters, which put him into first place heading into the finals. His second throw of the day held up through the finals to win the title. Justin Villars of Hastings came in second place with a throw of 50.65. The first-place finish from Mathis earned the Bees 10 points in the team competition. 

Jack Reemtsma competed in the prelims of the 110m hurdles, finishing with a time of 14.73. His effort was good enough for 24th place. 

The 4x4 squad of Jack Reemtsma, Kyle Sellers, Jonny Swarm and Will Reemtsma finished off the day for the Bees under the lights in the relay prelims. The team finished in 15th place with a time of 3:16.01. Wayland Baptist had the top qualifying time in the race with 3:10.95. 

Follow along here as the Bees compete on the final day of nationals on Friday. Mathis and Mick Saloninas will throw in the men's shot put final at 1 p.m., Annah Miller will compete in the women's discus final at 2 p.m., and Jack and Will Reemtsma will race in the 400m hurdles final at 4:20 p.m.
