A young St. Ambrose team suffered its first loss of the season at two-time defending NAIA National Champion and No. 1-ranked Saint Francis (Ind.) Saturday afternoon.
In a battle of unbeatens, the Saints defeated the Bees 60-14.
Saint Francis (3-0) led 19-0 in the first quarter. A four-yard touchdown pass from Jake Romani to Jake Osterberger early in the second quarter got SAU on the board, but USF responded with 27 straight points to close the half.
Hunter Thompson hauled in a 36-yard touchdown from Romani late in the third quarter to account for the other Bee touchdown.
The Cougars finished with more than 600 yards of total offense while the Bees were limited to fewer than 200.
St. Ambrose will play its home opener next Saturday against Missouri Baptist as part of Homecoming weekend. Kickoff at Brady Street Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
